Current Topics
This page lists topics of current concern to Conservative Clubs and their management committees

Club committees and their officers are advised to consider how these current topics may affect the livelihood of their club, and the impact on members, and take appropriate action. Advice and sources of information are given in each article below. If any club feels they need further advice or help on these issues, they are invited to contact the Secretary of the ACC, Philip Smith, or the Chairman, or Secretary of the Yorkshire Region Council of Conservative Clubs (see About Us for contact details).

Ban on Smoking in Public Places
This comes into force in England on July 1st 2007. Despite lobbying from the ACC this includes all enclosed spaces within private members' clubs. The relevant Act of Parliament can be seen here. A report on the last YRCCC meeting discussing how clubs may be able to deal with this is now available under the Meetings tag. Yes, the ban applies to clubs. No, you can't have a separate smoking room inside the club. Fines for breaking the law: £50 for the smoker, up to £2500 for the club; and £200 on-the-spot fines for not displaying "No Smoking" notices, increasing to £1000 if the case goes to court.
